Why Evolve?
When my son started playing for Park City Youth Lacrosse in 2nd grade, I didn't know that coaching lacrosse would become such a big part of my life.
When we moved to Park City and Hayden started playing lacrosse, my love of the game was re-ignited and supercharged. Thinking that I wasn't "qualified" to coach, I started my coaching journey by joining the Park City Youth Lacrosse Organization as its President. I thought I could apply my professional experience to help the organization in other areas.
Well, it didn't take too long to get into the coaching business. Filling coaching positions for our large organization is always an issue. Feeling that it was my responsibility to fill positions, I turned to the only person I could guarantee would coach, and that person was me. Now truth be told, we’ve been able to rely on many incredible coaches throughout the years. A big thank you to all of them.
Over the past decade, my journey has revealed that coaching is much more then the mere imparting of technical know-how. It is the intangibles that truly define an exceptional coach. I firmly believe that athletics have the potential to foster holistic development in youth athletes, both on and off the field. Yet, these favorable outcomes aren't a given. Today, we find ourselves immersed in what Michael Lewis aptly coins as the 'Youth Industrial Sports Complex' in his book 'Playing to Win.' This youth sport's landscape is flush with substantial revenues for clubs, camps, and academies, and some argue that it often resembles a mechanized system driven solely by numbers. Lewis observes, 'Youth sports is a massive industry. And it ain't slowing down.' Meanwhile, the Positive Coaching Alliance laments, 'Our youth sports culture over-values specialization, social comparison, and winning from early ages.' Much like a teacher within the classroom, coaches wield the power to profoundly impact a young person's life. In fact, a great coach can serve as a transformative force.
I started Evolve Lacrosse to help athletes learn lacrosse specific skills that will advance their game and play a part in developing grateful, humble, and passionate players.
